CONTEXT
The South-East of Madagascar is composed of the 2 Vatovavy Fitovinany and Atsimo Atsinanana Regions, and the East coast of the Anosy Region. These regions are among the poorest and most disadvantaged on the island, with alarming indicators of food insecurity.
In 2016, the analysis of household livelihood highlighted the challenge of developing agricultural production in terms of food security and poverty alleviation. But the constraints were numerous: cyclonic episodes, heavy but irregular rainfall (2,000 to 3,000 mm of rain per year), periods of recurrent drought. Traditional production systems had poor techno-economic performance, resulting in significant vulnerability of farms.
It is in this context that the Malagasy Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAEP) and AFD wanted to promote a common vision of agroecology at the regional level. Agrisud and its partners operated from 2017 to 2021.
OBJECTIVES AND SOLUTIONS PROVIDED
- Setting up demonstration sites on sustainable agricultural practices and land development
- Strengthening the capacity of Local Service Providers to provide local services (training in agroecology, supply of inputs, etc.)
- Spreading the project’s achievements on a wider scale with the Regional Agricultural Development Funds (FDAR)
RESULTS
4,863 family farms supported in their production or service activities
