The CNCR* as coordinator and Senegalese Focal Point of the Festival ALIMENTERRE organized, from 1st to 12 November 2022, screenings-debates in 10 cities of Senegal.

Agrisud co-organized two of these events, on November 9 with the Centre de Formation Professionnelle (CFP) in Fatick and on November 10 with Ecolyco at the Ngoye high school in Bambey. A total of 436 students and teachers attended these screenings and discussed the question "How to meet the challenge of food sovereignty in Senegal?"

Family farming to ensure food security in Senegal

The animated film "Tapis Vert" was selected to introduce the debate. This short film evokes the limits of so-called "modern" production systems that impoverish the soil. This unsustainable production method, which relies on synthetic inputs that are mainly imported, contributes to soil degradation and can lead to food insecurity .

Family farming is a solution and a profession for the future! It produces 80% of the world's food and therefore has a key role to play in the food sovereignty of countries. The farm as a local business also contributes to the economic development of its territory and to the preservation of the environment when it opts for agro-ecology.

The speakers explained this to the students by addressing the following points:

  • being a farmer means being an entrepreneur who innovates to develop his activities in a sustainable way;
  • agro-ecology allows the development of an agriculture that preserves natural resources (soil, water, plants) and enhances the landscape by planting trees, among others;
  • the agricultural and food sectors are a sector of the future in Senegal with a wide range of jobs (poultry farmer, technical advisor, seed producer, etc.);
  • consumers also have a role to play in supporting family and sustainable agriculture by favouring local and healthy products from agro-ecology.

The large number of students who attended these sessions showed great interest in the subjects covered. Awareness of agricultural and food issues will continue in these schools, which are committed to education for citizenship and international solidarity.
