On November 23 in Madagascar took place the last projection-debate co-organized by Agrisud in the framework of the Festival ALIMENTERRE 2022. The theme chosen, in consultation with the teachers of the University of Itasy, was the problems related to water in fish farming.

Agrisud and its partner APDRA - Pisciculture paysanne presented the sustainable solutions they implement within the framework of the Sustainable Aquaculture Program in Madagascar (PADM). Two films were shown for the 85 participants present and a rice-fish farmer who is a beneficiary of this program, who came to talk about his experience.

Challenges and solutions for sustainable fish farming in the Itasy Region, Madagascar

Agriculture in the Itasy Region is strongly affected by the effects of climate change, more specifically the irregularity of rainfall. The poor distribution of rainfall during the year leads to a decrease in fish production, both in quantity and quality. These losses have an impact on producers' incomes as well as on the nutritional security of families for whom fish is the main source of animal protein.

Fortunately, sustainable alternatives exist! This is what the speakers presented to the students through the projection of films and their speeches.

The first film "What strategy for developing large-scale peasant fish farming in Madagascar", produced within the framework of the MDAP, explains in an educational manner the actions implemented to increase and improve production. The main lever is the establishment of relationships and the search for "coactive" solutions between farmers.

The second film illustrated the technique of rice-fish culture, with a focus on the production of fry in rice fields. This agro-ecological practice makes it possible to intensify and diversify production with controlled water management. Family farms gain in autonomy, thus improving their income and their food.

The students were very interested in the strategies adopted by carp farmers in rice fields. The technical and economic complementarity offered by the association of fish farming and rice farming marked them. They were able to learn more about this subject by exchanging with Jeannot RANDRIANASOLO, rice-fish farmer accompanied by APDRA, in particular on the symbiotic relations that the association of the carp with rice farming brings.

Water resource management is a major issue for agricultural production and population nutrition. This session was an opportunity to show these future professionals in natural resource management and agro-ecology the sustainable alternatives for adapting to climate change that exist in their region, particularly with regard to fish farming. The co-construction of local solutions is an important part of developing sustainable agricultural and food systems.
