CONTEXT
The Beampingaratsy forest corridor in the Anôsy Region in south-east Madagascar is subject to heavy deforestation that contributes to climate change. Unsuitable agricultural practices on deforestation areas lead to rapid soil degradation and impact the ability of the people to live decently and sustainably on their land.
It is in this context that Agrisud and its partners conducted actions from 2014 to 2022 in support of family farms to reconcile agricultural development and preservation of ecosystems.
These actions were carried out as part of a more comprehensive programme to reduce emissions linked to deforestation, led by Nitidae.
OBJECTIVES
Supporting the development of sustainable alternatives to itinerant agricultural systems and the exploitation of forest resources.
More specifically:
- Supporting local communities in the development and enhancement of watersheds.
- Supporting farms in agroecological intensification and agricultural diversification.
- Supporting the emergence of a local and adapted agricultural service offering.
RESULTS
- 2,514 family farms supported in the sustainable development of their production and service activities
- Nearly 2,000 ha of managed agricultural land
