CONTEXT

The Vakinankaratra Region covers two sub-regions: the Highlands in the East, near Antsirabe, and the Middle West, around Ankazomiriotra. In both contexts, the production systems had to evolve.

In the Highlands, to intensify production while maintaining the productive potential of the territory, threatened by over-exploitation of soils and the massive and systematic use of chemical inputs causing pollution and loss of biodiversity.

In the Middle West, to optimize the use of labor, allowing better use of available spaces to protect them from animal straying and to maintain soil fertility.

It is with these objectives in mind that the Malagasy Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAEP) and AFD wanted to promote a common vision of agroecology at the regional level. Agrisud and its partners operated from 2017 to 2021.

OBJECTIVES

  • Setting up demonstration sites on sustainable agricultural practices and land development.
  • Strengthening the capacity of Local Service Providers to provide local services (training in agroecology, supply of inputs, etc.)
  • Spreading the project’s achievements on a wider scale with the Regional Agricultural Development Funds (FDAR)
