CONTEXT

The Angkor temples being nearby, the Siem Reap Province hosts most of Cambodia’s tourism, generating a high demand for fresh produce. This demand is largely met by products imported from neighboring countries. Local production is indeed seasonal, not very diversified and spread over a multitude of small family farms. In addition, marketing networks are still too poorly structured.

Since 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the operating environment. Border closures have restricted imports from neighboring countries and limited the availability of agricultural products. Today, the issue of food self-sufficiency in the Province is at the heart of the development strategies.

GOALS AND SOLUTIONS PROVIDED

  • Making sure that the supply of small family farms meets the markets through agroecological intensification, diversification, and marketing of production
  • Strengthening food self-sufficiency and resilience in the Province territory through the development of sustainable agriculture and food systems

RESULTS

  • 1,970 family farms supported.
  • 29 socio-professional organizations strengthened and 1 network of 85 master farmers developed.
  • 1 association “The Green Farmers Siem Reap” of 300 farms for the marketing of products.
  • 1 multi-stakeholder dynamics for the development of territorial food systems.
