CONTEXT

The Province of Siem Reap aims to develop a system for the collection and recycling of septic tank sludge with the dual objective of improving public health and producing organic fertilizers.

Based on feasibility studies conducted in 2017 and 2018, a partnership was established between AIMF, SIAAP, AESN, Agrisud, and the Province of Siem Reap.

The project, which began in July 2020, involves the collection of septic tank sludge, the construction of a treatment plant for the annual production of 350 to 400 tons of organic fertilizers derived from composting beds planted with reeds (Phragmites australis), and their agricultural use.

OBJECTIVES

Improve the conditions for collecting and treating septic tank sludge in Siem Reap, produce organic fertilizers, and incorporate them into local agricultural systems (rice farming, vegetable farming, fruit tree cultivation, etc.).

EXPECTED RESULTS

  • An operational treatment facility with a production capacity of 350 to 400 tons per year.
  • An economically viable and environmentally responsible system managed—from collection to recovery—by professional operators who have received support throughout the three-year project.
