CONTEXT
The lack of water availability tends to increase in the Haute-Matsiatra Region, which is particularly exposed to climate change. In addition, the methods of valorization of natural spaces cause poor infiltration of rainwater, accelerated erosion of slopes, and finally a drying up of springs.
The Eaurizon 2025 programme, conducted within the framework of a decentralized cooperation between the Haute-Matsiatra Region and the Metropolis of Lyon, seeks to improve sustainable access to water for rural populations, while enhancing the topography and water resources that are naturally present in the territory.
As part of this program, Agrisud and its partners oversee the implementation of the IWRM (Integrated Water Resources Management) component.
OBJECTIVES
- Sustainably developing and preserving the water resources of the micro-watersheds in the Haute-Matsiatra Region
- Improving the IWRM skills of stakeholders in the region
- Increasing the performance of agricultural production systems
RESULTS
- 715 family farms supported in the implementation of sustainable practices
- 12 local institutions (3 regional technical services and 9 municipalities) trained in IWRM
