CONTEXT

The municipalities of Aït Zineb and Amerzgane, in the province of Ouarzazate, were severely affected by the September 2023 earthquake. Already weakened by agricultural decline, repeated droughts, rural exodus, and limited access to services, these areas have poverty rates (8.6%) and vulnerability rates (21.5%) higher than the national average.

The earthquake exacerbated this precarious situation by destroying essential infrastructure—irrigation canals, khettaras (irrigation wells), agricultural buildings, and equipment—leading to the decapitalization of family farms.

In a context where relief efforts remain focused on the immediate emergency, the project proposes a medium- to long-term response to revive agricultural activities, support families, and strengthen the resilience of rural areas.

OBJECTIVES

  • Support the recovery of family farms affected by the earthquake by replenishing production inputs (seeds, seedlings, livestock, equipment)
  • Support 500 farms in improving their practices and transitioning to agroecology
  • Facilitate access to agricultural water through the rehabilitation of agricultural water infrastructure (water points, solar-powered pumps, retention structures)
  • Empower families, particularly women, through technical training and local advisory services
  • Identify and develop promising local value chains to improve market access

RESULTS

  • 500 family farms supported, representing approximately 2,500 beneficiaries
  • Revitalization of agricultural activities: provision of seeds, seedlings, small livestock, and essential equipment
  • Rehabilitation of rural infrastructure (canals, water structures) in collaboration with municipalities and water user associations
  • Adoption of improved agroecological practices through professional development programs and close monitoring
