CONTEXT

In Madagascar, 20 million farmers have to change their practices, their production systems, and their collective organization to face the environmental, economic and social challenges that arise today.

But the necessary innovations are specific to each context and depend on the capacities of the stakeholders involved in these processes.

These include jointly improving labor productivity and nutrition in the Highlands, optimizing production systems taking low rainfall in the South into consideration, diversifying crops and improving post-harvest treatments of expanding value chains to face fluctuations in export markets on the East Coast.

It is in this context that research partners and development organizations - including Agrisud - have decided to collaborate within the framework of the MAKIS project.

OBJECTIVES

This project aims to develop agricultural innovation capacities in Madagascar.

More specifically, it aims to experiment with support systems for agricultural innovation in order to formulate proposals for strengthening institutional capacities for innovation support in Madagascar (Itasy region for Agrisud's actions).

RESULTS

  • Malagasy family farming innovation context is analyzed
  • The functioning and performance of the various innovation support approaches are analyzed and improved
  • Relevant technical innovations are built, evaluated, and appropriated widely in areas of intervention
  • Recommendations based on an operational guide validated through empirical observation are formulated
