CONTEXT

To reduce the vulnerability of Haitian farms and improve their resilience to climate risks, the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) wanted to carry out a research-training-dissemination programme in the Municipality of Saint-Raphaël, in the Northern Department of Haiti.

This programme aims at securing and increasing agricultural production by improving climate risk management.

It has been entrusted to Agrisud International, in consortium with the University Campus of the Haitian State in Limonade, IRD France, and Gradimirh (Research-Action Group for the Integrated Development of Haitian Rural Environment).

OBJECTIVES

Conducting research-and-training, capacity-building, and dissemination actions with farms, in order to:

  • Promote adaptation and improvement of sustainable and resilient agricultural systems;
  • Provide families with the knowledge and tools necessary to adapt to climate change;
  • Create a favorable environment to better address agricultural constraints.

RESULTS

  • 500 family farms in the Municipality of Saint-Raphaël supported the implementation of new systems.
  • 5 Haitian students from the University Campus of Limonade (PhD students, Master and field internships) trained and contributing to the research carried out by the program.
