2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Farming and migration flows

2015 has just been closed and Agrisud has already reached the milestone of 50,000 small farms launched. The continuous annual rhythm will accelerate.
Right time to assess our results : we are announcing the number of families taken out of unsecurity, an annual food production, a quantity of sequestered carbon, tens of thousands of jobs created. We should add some contributions to local food security and a better nutrition, together with a better preservation of environment, soil and water.
Agrisud achievements are sustainable : farmers are anchored in local markets, their small business is profitable, they manage to keep soils naturally fertile. This is why the survival rate among those small businesses is 85 % after 4 years. Agrisud is an actor in sustainable development.
Let’s also keep in mind the number of generated jobs, in rural territories and around the cities. Compared to intensive farming, small agricultural businesses require more labour supply per hectare and per produced ton. In this way they helps lower massive rural exodus, especially in developing countries, which undergo great migration flows – to overpopulated cities, to neighbouring countries and to Europe.
Maintaining and developing farm jobs, while improving farm productivity and sustainability, allow to stop flow of refugees. This is why local governments and sponsors should support small family farming businesses still more than they do.
On their modest scale Agrisud determinedly contributes and will contribute towards this developing system. Thanks to our teams, they are active in the field !

An ambition to be shared

This year we want to take a new look on our achievements, with an unusual display.
One side of the new layout shows at a glance the whole of our activities developed in 2015 throughout 18 countries. It presents also at the same time the human resources and the many partners mobilized on those fields of operation, the financial resources deployed and their origin, as well as the results they generate.
On the other side, the new layout also explains – and it’s new for us – our approach and our methodology over the last 24 years. At its core, agroecological and economically profitable family-size farming businesses are clearly an answer to poverty, as well as to economic, social, or environmental challenges: all this been attested by projects and testimonials coming from our field operations.
All this makes up a knowledge base and structures day-to-day actions of our teams. It reinforces the quality of their on-site results. This is why, in order to develop this distinctive know-how and multiply our impact, it is our ambition to double the number of yearly supported very small businesses within 5 years, which shall result in 8,000 of them in 2020. In the meantime, 30,000 new very small businesses will have taken 280,000 people out of poverty.
Hard and... inspiring task. All those of you willing to support and share this ambition with us are welcome!

undertaking against poverty

Agrisud teams promote the economic integration of precarious persons by creating or consolidating very small family farms and farming businesses, well anchored in their area as well as in local markets.
These very small businesses are operational and sustainable because they are agroecological, efficiently managed and economically profitable, and also because entrepreneurs are accompanied throughout a professionalization plan that brought them from poverty to self-reliance.
Over the last 24 years, more than 50,000 very small businesses have been created and reinforced throughout 23 countries in Africa, Asia, South America and Caribs, and more recently in France too.
464,000 people have been taken out of poverty this way.

why ? how ?
Nowadays, Nowadays, 1.4 billion persons live in poverty, often facing great difficulties in finding daily food. This situation is largely due to economic exclusion, which itself gradually leads to social exclusion.
Especially in the countryside. Because of socio-economic, political or climate disorders, many small farmers cannot manage to live on their working income anymore, which drives them to exodus, although family farming counts for 70% of the world production
We do not accept this situation.
We believe that allowing those people to come back into the economic circuit through undertaking is one of the answers
Our entrepreneurial and innovative approach with strong ability to forge partnerships.
Our position as a unifier and integrator, able to coordinate a number of actors.
Our capacity to consider the challenges of sustainable development.
Our strong technical and socio-economic expertise, in farms and businesses management, structuring value-chains and territories, providing professional training…
Our upstream downstream action: diagnosis and feasibility studies, program implementation through professionalization plans, direct support for business installation, professional organization, integration into value-chains and territories…
Our approach of spin-off and sustainability, with transfer of capacity to local partners.
