Strenghtening and sustainable development of farming activities in Marrakech’s palm grove

Palmeraie b

As part of the Safeguard and Development Programme of the Palmeraie of Marrakech, the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment decided to work for the improvement of living conditions of the population.

Agrisud and Norsys Foundation realized in 2014 a diagnostic study to identify a project to strengthen and sustainable development of agricultural activities for the benefit of populations and territory.

The idea is to promote a network of small sustainable economic activities to benefit people who implement them (income generation), and also restored the natural environment (Palmeraie).

Agriculture is undoubtedly the sector that can best articulate these beneficial relationship men / territories: the people engaged in agricultural activities that protect the Palmeraie, and Palmeraie (canopy) protects agricultural activities.

The Mohammed VI Foundation and its partners, and Agrisud Norsys Foundation, implement a pilot project in which 50 family farms in the North West Palmeraie (25% of census farms) will be accompanied.

Fruit farming professionalization (phase 6) and securing access to water – Asni

Madeleine Caillard

Madeleine Caillard

In Asni’s farming valley (50km from Marrakech), the weather is quite good to fruit growing. However, there are two constraints: not enough information or training on orchard management and bad valuation of products on the market. As the farmers’ incomes are decreasing they often have to migrate or have another activity. Agrisud is leading this project with its Moroccan partner, the Norsys Foundation and support from the Club Med. The goal is to professionalize the farmers and their grouping.
